How the plan works
Most study plans fail because they start from the exam date and a wish, not from the hours a person actually has. This builder starts from your hours. It works out how many questions those hours buy, then spreads them over the weeks you have in five phases:
- Baseline. Mixed questions in study mode, to find your weak subjects. Do not judge the score.
- Subject practice. Larger subjects get more time. Subjects you mark as hardest come first.
- Catch-up weeks. Built in so one bad week does not derail the plan.
- Mixed and timed practice. The exam mixes everything, so the last weeks do too, with full 115-question sections at about 83 seconds a question.
- Taper. A lighter final week: error log, weak areas and rest.
If you have little time, the plan covers fewer subjects in more depth instead of spreading a handful of questions across all twenty. It says so when it does that.
Common questions
- Is the MCCQE1 study plan builder free?
- Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. Your exam date and hours are not sent anywhere or stored.
- How does the plan work out how many questions to do each week?
- It assumes about 80 percent of your study time goes to questions and that each question takes about four and a half minutes once you include reading the explanation. Those are planning estimates, so time yourself for a week and adjust.
- How many weeks do I need to prepare for the MCCQE1?
- It depends on your starting point and the hours you can give each week. As a rough guide, ten hours a week over about twenty weeks reaches roughly two thousand questions with timed practice at the end. Your first two weeks of baseline questions will show how much work you need.
- Is this an official Medical Council of Canada plan?
- No. It is a study aid built by IMGQBank. The exam format it plans for, 230 multiple-choice questions in two sections of 115, comes from the Medical Council of Canada, but the schedule is our own method and cannot guarantee a result.
- Can I use the plan with a different question bank?
- Yes. The structure of baseline, subject practice, mixed practice, timed sections and a taper works with any question bank. The subject list and question numbers are based on the 20 subjects in IMGQBank.
- What if I fall behind?
- The plan includes catch-up weeks for longer schedules. If you lose a week anyway, count the weeks left and build the plan again from today's date with the same exam date.
