The Best Way to Review Weak Subjects in the Last 2 Weeks Before MCCQE1
Educational Content
You're close to exam day and there are still subjects you're struggling with. Here's a focused, realistic plan for the final stretch.
The Two-Week Mindset Shift
Two weeks out, you need to stop trying to learn new things and start consolidating what you already know.
This is counterintuitive. When you see a weak subject, the instinct is to read everything about it from scratch. That's the wrong move. You don't have time to build deep understanding — but you do have time to nail the high-yield patterns.
Step 1: Identify Your Real Weak Areas
Don't go by feeling. Go by data.
Pull your question bank statistics and find your bottom 3–4 categories by accuracy. These are your targets for the next two weeks.
Be specific. "Cardiology is weak" isn't actionable. "Acute coronary syndrome management and heart failure pharmacology" is.
Step 2: The 3-Pass Method
For each weak subject, do three passes over two weeks:
Pass 1 (Days 1–3): High-yield notes only. Use a single, trusted source (Amboss, Toronto Notes, First Aid equivalent). Don't read everything — read the high-yield summaries and classic presentations.
Pass 2 (Days 4–7): Practice questions focused on this topic only. Do 20–30 targeted questions. Review every one.
Pass 3 (Days 8–12): Mixed practice — include your weak topics in normal mixed blocks. This simulates exam conditions and tests whether the learning transferred.
Step 3: Protect Your Strong Areas
The biggest mistake in the final two weeks is neglecting subjects you're already good at in favour of weak ones.
Spend 70% of your time on weak areas. Spend 30% doing maintenance on your strong ones.
If you stop doing cardiology questions for two weeks because you're focused on psychiatry, your cardiology score will drop.
Day-by-Day Schedule: Week 1
| Day | Activity |
|---|---|
| Mon | Weak subject 1: High-yield review (60 min) |
| Tue | Weak subject 1: 25 targeted questions + review |
| Wed | Weak subject 2: High-yield review (60 min) |
| Thu | Weak subject 2: 25 targeted questions + review |
| Fri | Mixed block (50 questions), all subjects |
| Sat | Weak subjects 3 & 4: High-yield review |
| Sun | Rest. Anki only. |
The Night Before: What Not to Do
Don't try to cram your weakest subject the night before. Sleep outperforms last-minute review for memory consolidation.
Review your strongest subject for 20 minutes — this builds confidence, not new knowledge. Then stop.
Final Thought
Everyone walks into MCCQE1 with gaps. The candidates who pass aren't the ones who eliminated every gap — they're the ones who managed their preparation strategically until the end.
Two weeks is enough to meaningfully improve. Use it well.
