How to Study During Residency Without Burning Out
Educational Content
Between 80-hour weeks and call duties, finding time to study feels impossible. Here are realistic strategies from residents who managed to do both.
The Honest Truth About Studying During Residency
Nobody has it figured out. The residents who look like they're managing well have also had weeks where they did zero studying. The difference is they don't let a bad week become a bad month.
This is about sustainable minimums, not peak performance.
Your Minimum Viable Study Plan
When time is scarce, protect these three things:
- 120 questions per day (30–35 minutes)
- 215 minutes of Anki (on your phone, anywhere)
- 3One deep review session per week (60–90 minutes, scheduled like a meeting)
That's it. On a brutal week, that's enough to stay in shape without burning out.
Finding Time You Didn't Know You Had
Commute: 20–40 minutes each way adds up. Use Anki during transit. Listen to Sketchy or Amboss audio during drives.
Waiting time: Pre-op holds, waiting for labs, between patients. Keep your phone loaded with 10-question blocks.
Lunch: 3 days a week, eat at your desk and do questions. Not every day — you need real breaks too.
Post-call day: You're off but exhausted. Do only Anki. That counts.
The Call Night Strategy
On overnight call, you will have downtime. Use the first quiet period (usually 10pm–1am) for one focused hour. After that, prioritize sleep if you can get it.
Don't try to study when you're running on empty at 3am — it doesn't stick and you'll be useless the next day.
Protecting Recovery Time
Burnout doesn't come from working hard. It comes from working hard without recovery.
Non-negotiables:
- One full day off per week with zero studying
- One social commitment per week (protect it)
- Sleep is studying — 7 hours outperforms 5 hours + 2 hours of tired studying
If you're consistently hitting 60+ hour weeks and studying on top of it with no recovery, something has to give. Sustainability over two years beats intensity for two months and then collapse.
When You Fall Behind
You will fall behind. Here's the plan:
- 1Don't try to catch up on everything — you can't
- 2Identify your highest-yield weak areas and focus there
- 3Do one big reset weekend (Saturday + Sunday, 4 hours each) to rebuild momentum
- 4Return to your minimum viable plan on Monday
Missing a week doesn't undo months of work. Getting back on track quickly does.
